My initial plan was to use carbon fibre ski poles, and I even got a pair of telescopic poles, although only about 1,7 metres long, so some sort of extension had to be made.
Then I changed my mind. I will try to make extensions from 15mm diameter PVC tube with unidirectional carbon outside. The PVC is ductile but soft where as the carbon is stiff but brittle. I hope the combination will make stiff and durable extensions. I make them 3 metres long, and will cut them to the desired length after trying out on the boat.
PVC tube, UD carbon fibre, wide enough for two wraps around the tube, peel ply and plastic film ready for lamination. The PVC tube is rubbed with a coarse sanding paper to make sure there is some bonding between the two parts of the construction.
All the layers wrapped around the tube and packaging tape used to get some compression in the laminate. The tube is supported on two sides to make sure it comes out straight after curing. It will be exciting to see if this schedule makes a stiff enough tube, of if further laminating is required.

Hi Tor,
CST Composites in Sydney do 5.05meter lengths and can do up to 12 meter lengths if required. The postage might be a bigger problem :-)

Hi Tor,
Menno also uses pvc pipe for tiller extension, see

The pipe is probably one size bigger, and it's stiff enough as is.
The attachment to the tiller is a piece of reinvorced pvc tube (small diameter, relatively large wall thickness). This also works good.

Hi Tor , we use 2 extensions as a long one is often inconvenient . We use a Forespar 104017 675mm - 1220mm adjustable for the short one , this then fits into a lockbox on the coaming if needed . The great thing about the Forespar fittings is they are removeable with a pushbutton . Our long extension is a Ronstan RF3137 - 2.5m with a Forespar base fitting . Works very well , you may find your composite extension is quite heavy . Regards , Jim Buckland .
Tanks all. I'm out of town and have not yet been able to unwrap my extension. I have a set of commercial attachments, although not removable by a pushbutton. I don't remember the make.
I'll take the offcuts from the extensions and use them to rig up some gopro mounts. Need to get some good video next season.
